1937 Firearms Act (Union of South Africa)
Magistrates Number Listing
|
The listing is unfortunately, incomplete and any further information in this regard would be welcomed Please contact the SAAACA Office with any additional detail A SAAACA Research Initiative The Firearms Act of 1937 required that all unnumbered firearms were to be taken to the holders nearest Magistrates Office and have a number affixed in terms of the Act. Differing magisterial districts were allocated a one or two letter prefix, starting at 'A', to be followed with a number, starting at 1 and were obliged to keep a register of these numbers, the arms and the persons to whom they were assigned The numbers were generally crudely and inconsistently applied with an assortment of punches and are considered by many to have spoiled the arm to which they are applied. As this requirement was seen as an unnecessary intrusion by certain sectors of the population and being implemented in the time General Jan Smuts was Prime Minster of the Union, these numbers became known as 'Jan Smuts numbers'. Many arms in circulation today still bear these numbers and hopefully this listing will provide an insight as to the history of these pieces.
